Venue: Department of Paediatrics, National University Hospital
Training Duration: 4 modules of 6 months each
Training Objectives : To train fellows to be competent in managing patients with allergic diseases, immune deficiencies and paediatric rheumatological conditions. This includes understanding the basis for immunological tests, interpreting these tests, performing skin tests for allergy, and food and drug challenges. The 4 modules are:
1. Paediatric Airway Allergy
2. Paediatric Allergy - Others
3. Paediatric Immunology
4. Paediatric Rheumatology
The trainee will be exposed to both clinical and laboratory based research projects in allergy and immunology. He/she will be given protected time (up to 30%) to complete a research project under supervision.
Method of Training
The trainee will be expected to see patients in at least 2 clinic sessions per week under the supervision of a consultant. He/she will also be expected to attend specialty clinics such as the rheumatology clinic. The trainee will be posted to the allergy clinical diagnostic lab where he/she will familiarize him/herself with allergy tests such as skin prick tests, intradermal tests, spirometry, eNO measurement, etc. The trainee will also spend time in the wet laboratory to observe how immunological tests (Lymphocyte subsets measurements, lymphocyte proliferation, DHR tests for CGD) are performed.
The trainee will see in-patients referred to the allergy/immunology service and discuss the case with the consultant. The trainee will also conduct in-patient food and drug challenges under supervision. He/she will be expected to be competent in managing allergic reactions including anaphylaxis.
Supervision
The trainee will be supervised by Prof Hugo Van Bever, A/Prof Lee Bee Wah and A/Prof Lynette Shek.
Assessment
Formative assessment will be done once every 2 weeks through discussion of clinic cases seen. Formal assessment will be done once every 3 months by his main supervisor.
